Rationale:
Students will learn about the contributions that Chinese Americans have made and they will develop a greater understanding and appreciation for that culture.
After lunch, students will have the opportunity to explore the oldest part of Los Angeles, learning more about the history of the city and Mexican American culture.

Preparation:
Group tours at the museum need to be arranged 3 weeks in advance
Permission slips sent out to parents, signed, and returned
Get 5-6 parent volunteers
Arrange bus transportation
Pre-arrange groups for the museum
Make scavenger hunt worksheets (teacher should visit beforehand)
Bring 3-4 sack lunches as extras for students who don't bring one

Safety Concerns:
Bus transportation there and back
Walking around in small groups on Olvera Street (there will be one parent or teacher for each 4-5 students)

Budget:
The museum is free, but donations are welcome. We will donate $45.
Students will bring their own sack lunches, but 3-4 will be provided just in case.
The rest of the budget can be used for the bus to and from the museum.

Schedule:
Arrive at 10am. Go through 45-minute guided tour, arranged in advance, with whole class. After, break into groups of 4 or 5 students with one teacher or parent in each group. Students will go through a scavenger hunt worksheet and answer questions based on specific exhibits in the museum. At 12, students will gather outside the museum with their sack lunches and walk to LA Plaza Park to eat. After lunch, each group will explore Olvera Street after lunch, walking around with their parent volunteer. Everyone will gather back at the bus by 1:30.

Follow-Up:
Class discussion the following day. Students will Think-Pair-Share about their favorite exhibit or something they learned, and then volunteers will share with the whole class. This will lead to further discussion about Chinese American culture and the history of Los Angeles.
